The Cicada’s Cry

松脂をはなれかねてや せみ の 聲

To escape the pine pitch;

The cicada’s cry.

This mournful summer hokku was composed by Gijōen and translated by David Coomler.

  1. Some parts of the U.S. are experiencing the emergence of broods of periodical cicadas. It’s a fascinating natural phenomenon that, I think, everyone needs to experience. Thank you for the excellent, yet sad, hokku, David. And, as usual, thanks for the translations.
